Story

Claire Beauchamp Randall, a World War II nurse, is mysteriously transported back in time to Scotland in 1743. There, she meets a dashing Highland warrior and becomes embroiled in an epic rebellion. Moore (creator of the TV series), his team decided to keep the Gaelic words instead of translating them into English. This kept the narrative in the first person, showing Claire’s inability to understand Gaelic. The idea was suggested by producer David Brown, who said he saw something similar in Skin Deep (1998), an alternative foreign film starring actor and singer Gustavo Goulart.

The first half of season 2 (set in France) has some of the lyrics in French

In several episodes, characters say “Okay.” ; An American expression that only came into use in the 19th century. The theme song changes from season to season to reflect the events taking place in the story. The second half of season 2 (mainly about the preparations for war) adds a militaristic drum roll to the opening theme. Season 3 adds tribal drums, as most of the season is set in the West Indies. Season 4 also features blue fiddle and banjo, and some songs are sung in a Southern accent, as the season is set mainly in America.

Appears in the film Outlander: An Epic Adaptation (2015)

The Skye Boat Song (uncredited) Traditional Scottish air with lyrics by Sir Harold Boulton New lyrics by Robert Louis Stevenson. Outlander has been a part of my life for the past 23 years. I’ve read it countless times, in fact I started it again yesterday. I am proud and humbled to be one of the first seven Ladies of Lallybroch to be associated with one of the first global groups dedicated to Diana Gabaldon and The Books. The cinematography of the “Books” version has teased, teased, flirted with our imaginations and hopes for decades.

Now it is here

And here it is. Every detail is stunning – the script, the costumes, the sets and, yes, the actors. The series is a visual companion to The Books and a blissful companion. It is also more of an adaptation than a literal reading. The fidelity to the characters and stories we love is ensured by Diana’s ongoing involvement in the creative process.

Caitriona Balfe is truly Claire, as Sam Heughan is Jamie

She fiercely defends her story, and with it her fans, who are both legion and legends. A toast to Ron Moore, Maril Davis and the entire crew (Terry for the amazing costumes) for giving us Outlander…
