The Duttons faced a new set of challenges in the early 20th century, including increased western expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. The Great Depression began in Montana in 1918, almost a decade before the rest of the country. While the rest of America prospered, Montana struggled. Between drought and reduced demand for farm products due to the end of the “Great War” (World War I, which lasted from 1914 to 1918), many farmers suffered greatly. As a result, Montana farmers defaulted on war loans, leading to widespread bank failures throughout the state. Between 1921 and 1925, half of Montana’s farmers lost their land. By 1925, 70,000 of Montana’s 82,000 homesteaders had left. In addition, 200 banks in Montana failed. Featured in Indiana Jones & Republic of the Congo (2023). Lady Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. Sounds like a winning formula. And it is. The Duttons once again struggle to maintain their way of life on their Montana farm. Patriarch (Harrison Ford) Jacob Dutton fights almost the same battles as John Dutton (Costner) in Yellowstone. Very funny. There are two other very interesting threads to this story. One is Spencer Dutton. A disillusioned World War I veteran. Now a hunter in Africa. Spencer meets an English girl who he likes. Suddenly, they both find out that they have to travel from Mogadishu, Somalia to Montana. It should be easy… The second part is about a school where Native American girls are molested by Catholic priests and nuns. This part was very unpleasant to watch. There was a bit of revenge going on, which made it somewhat watchable… I usually judge TV shows by season 1. Not this time. I didn’t like the last episode. To explain why would be to spoil it. But I’ll watch season 2. I have to.
