Tale
Sheryl Bradshaw, a single woman looking for a suitor on a hit 1970s TV show, chooses the charming bachelor Rodney Alcala, unaware that behind the man’s kind facade he hides a deadly secret. The IMDb team has compiled a list of some notable 2024 films directed by women. Some of Sheryl’s bad experiences as an aspiring actress mirror those of Anna Kendrick. Sheryl’s breast comment is “taken verbatim from something that happened to me when I was 19.” The coins stolen from the laundromat are modern quarters. 3 different Washington heads can be seen.

It’s as if I could literally feel her own fear and discomfort
This film does a great job of revealing the ways psychopaths often use charm to lure their victims in. I appreciate the fact that the film is by no means your typical horror film or your typical psychological thriller. Most of the violent acts in this film are only portrayed through the events leading up to (or after) them, and much of the actual violence is portrayed indirectly rather than actually shown. It keeps things light enough—and doesn’t show enough actual violence—that the film remains watchable, but at the same time, it is often very disturbing and unsettling. The scene in the parking lot after the Dating Game taping really perfectly conveyed the same feeling that Anna’s character would have been feeling at the time.
Anyone expecting a typical serial killer movie will be disappointed with this one
I thought Anna’s acting and direction in this film were excellent, as was the entire performance in general. What I appreciate most about this film is its underlying message(s) or themes about how women can easily fall prey to the darker side of the male ego and how manipulative some men can be when it comes to women, such as exploiting women’s innocence or vulnerability for their own selfish gain. I also appreciate how it shows that society in general (and especially at that time) actually encourages and often condones this type of treatment of women — dehumanizing and objectifying them. And as the film shows, even intelligent women are susceptible to the psychopath’s charms — and society alone can make them vulnerable. This message was not only conveyed through Rodney’s behavior and violence, but also through the behavior of some of the other male characters in the film.
