Sheryl Bradshaw, a single woman looking for a suitor on a popular 1970s sitcom, chooses charming bachelor Rodney Alcala, unaware that behind the man’s gentle facade lies a deadly secret. Some of Sheryl’s negative experiences as an aspiring actress mirror Anna Kendrick’s own. The comment about Sheryl’s breasts is “drawn literally from something that happened to me when I was 19.” The coins stolen from the laundry room are modern quarters.

The music and cinematography are impressive and engaging, and the script is well-paced and character-driven
Autumn Best easily stands out as the acting in Anna Kendrick’s first directorial effort, but Daniel Zovatto is also perfectly terrifying as serial killer Rodney Alcala. I realize this is LOOSELY based on the true story of Alcala’s crimes, but the writer(s) got a little creative with the real story (the character “Laura” (played by Nicolette Robinson) never existed, Rodney was the number one bachelor, not the third, etc.). I also would have liked a little more background on him and how he became such a monster.

Overall, this was a tense, interesting, and fairly frustrating look at what has to be one of the strangest serial murder cases of the last 50 years. I see good things ahead for Anna Kendrick’s directing career. The final season of What We Do in the Shadows is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
