After the Pope’s death, his ring (the so-called Fisherman’s Ring) is taken away and destroyed
Tale
When Cardinal Lawrence is given the task of presiding over one of the most secret and ancient events in the world: the election of a new Pope. He finds himself in the middle of a conspiracy that could shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Much of what Cardinal Lawrence and the other cardinals do during the conclave process in the film is in keeping with Catholic belief and centuries-old tradition. The Vatican officially announces that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant.
It is said that Ayendi would be the first African pope
The Papal Apartments are cordoned off with a red ribbon and sealed with a Papal wax stamp. The College of Cardinals is sequestered in chambers (Domus Sanctae Marthae, House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes. Finally, the windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the actual election takes place and the votes are cast, are darkened, shuttered and locked to preserve the secrecy of the conclave. The Roman Catholic Church has had three African popes: Victor I (189-199 AD), Miltiades (also known as Melchiades, 311-314 AD) and Gelasius I (492-496 AD).
And therefore no need for faith
Lawrence: Our faith is alive precisely because it goes hand in hand with doubt. If there were only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. Let us pray that God will give us a pope who doubts. And let him give us a Pope who sins and asks for forgiveness and moves on..

The acting, intrigue, dialogue and camera work are on point throughout, but the warning signs are there earlier in the film
When the potential candidates talk about being a new liberal progressive church, you wonder where else they are going, and boy, what do they do. I overlooked the odd change in tone, but the ending, which I won’t give away, is from a different film and results in the main character going against everything they strive for in the film. It seems like a slightly less expected political thriller about a major world event when it happens, but there are rollercoaster rides in the final scenes.
