A girl’s gift for narrating events in Hollywood films changes the fate of her family in 1960s Chile. Cast: From Here to Eternity (1953). The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, is both a tribute to American Westerns and a discovery of the life-changing power of film/narrative. In Spanish with subtitles, the characters draw from life, a rather difficult life. The community set in the “driest place on earth” is not unhappy. There is plenty of room for gentle comedy and young love. The camera turns away from real violence, but not from the story, which is honest about what goes on behind the scenes for the young woman at the center of the story in a small town in the icy desert. The film was shot in an abandoned mining town, which only adds to the variety.
